You are planning on getting married – congratulations! If you are a non-native Dutch speaker, then in some municipalities you need to engage an interpreter.

What can you expect?

If you want to get married for free, then the ceremony is as follows:

the civil registrar briefly outlines the ceremony
you are then asked to stand up and hold each other’s right hand
you declare that you take each other to be the wedded husband or wife
‘I will!’
the rings, if you are not already wearing them
the sealing of your marriage with a kiss!
the reading of the marriage certificate by the registrar
the signing of the certificate, first by you and then by your witnesses
the handing over of the marriage booklet

Consecutive interpreter

As an English interpreter, I can assist you during the solemnisation of your marriage. I interpret consecutively. This means that the civil registrar talks first, then pauses, so that I have the opportunity to translate what has just been said in Dutch. We keep taking turns in this way until the ceremony is over.
